The Music Department offers a variety of awards and scholarships to incoming and continuing students. All students majoring in music must contact the department chair to schedule an admissions audition before determining eligibility for any award.

Adrienne Arow Davis Music Scholarship   Established in 1968 in memory of Mrs. Davis, a voice teacher at E&H (1959-68) and wife of Dr. Charles R. Davis (E&H ‘52), a member of the music faculty until 1996.  Awarded to an entering freshman and a rising sophomore, junior, and senior majoring in music and studying voice .
Audition requirements


Sidney Davis Memorial Scholarship   Established in 1978 in memory of Mr. Davis by his family, including his son, Dr. John Doug Davis, who taught music at E&H from 1976-83.  Awarded to a senior music major with the highest GPA (at least 3.3) at the end of the junior year.


Linda B. Hammond Music Scholarship   Established in 1987 in memory of Mrs. Hammond (E&H ‘71) by her family and friends.  Given to a returning student majoring in music and/or planning career in music.  Mrs. Hammond was a public school teacher and an accomplished musician.


Clarice Peery Hankley Piano Scholarship   Established in 1998 in memory of Clarice Peery Hankley.  Mrs. Hankley was a life-long resident of Glade Spring, Virginia, and a graduate of Martha Washington College in Abingdon.  She thoughtfully provided for this fund in her will in support of scholarships in the Music Department at Emory & Henry College.  This annual award is a merit-based scholarship given to a talented piano student who may or may not be majoring in Piano Performance.

Margy Gatherum Smith Memorial Scholarship   Established in 1999 in memory of Margaret Gatherum Smith (E&H '72) through memorial contributions from family and friends, and a gift from the Class of 2000. At the time of her death in 1999, Mrs. Smith was Co-President of the Parent's Council, along with her husband Will, and a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.  This annual award is to be made to a deserving student majoring in vocal performance or vocal music education who shows great promise and aptitude. Applicants will be required to audition before a committee selected by the music department.

Josephine Groseclose Wiltsee Organ Scholarship   Originally established in 1984 by Mrs. Wiltsee’s sister, Dr. Nancy Pence Groseclose (member of the biology faculty 1983-94), to honor Mrs. Wiltsee on her 80th birthday, renamed in 1991 upon Mrs. Wiltsee’s death as a memorial to her.  Awarded to an outstanding organ student planning to pursue advanced organ lessons beyond the first year.  Mrs. Wiltsee studied organ while a student at Martha Washington College (1921-22).
