Biographical Profile for James Duchamp

 

James Duchamp, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Chemistry and chair of the Chemistry Department, grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan and was educated at Kalamazoo College (B.A., 1987), and Yale University (Ph.D., 1992). After post-doctoral work at Cornell University, he joined the Emory & Henry College faculty in 1994.

A physical chemist by training, Professor Duchamp enjoys working with students and helped them organize the award winning Emory & Henry College chapter of the Student Affiliate of American Chemistry Society. During the summers, he has been supported by the Petroleum Research Fund, the Appalachian College Association and Center for Self-Assembled Nanostructures and Devices at Virginia Tech to pursue research concerning the synthesis and characterizaiton of endohedral metallofullerenes. Professor Duchamp's research has been published several in peer-reviewed journals including Nature and the Journal of the American Chemistry Society. He is a member several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society and the Virginia Academy of Sciences. He served as chair of the Northeast Tennessee Section of the American Chemical Society in 2002.

Professor Duchamp has been a leader in applying internet technologies in his courses and supervises the chemistry department world wide web site. He resides near the college in Emory, Virginia with his dog. He enjoys cooking, bicycling, travel and rowing. He has traveled in Europe and spent six months as an exchange student at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, Africa.
