Test 1: Environmental Studies 225
This is a take-home test for Appalachian Natural History and Conservation.
This is due on Tue Sep 25th. The test is to be typed and delivered in hard copy (not e-mailed to me).
To give you a chance to work on this, we will not meet for class on Thursday, Sep 20th.
Question 1: Wildlife Protection and Agricultural (Farming) Practices.
Part of a modern sustainable approach to agriculture and farming, in the agrarian tradition,
is to be good stewards of both the land and of wildlife on the land. Write an essay outlining the logic
of this type of thinking, and the general benefits that derive from this approach. In your essay,
include at least three good examples of this approach, and outline the benefits to both the wildlife,
and to the farmer/gardener. These examples can be fictitious, can be taken from our class reading
materials, or can be found in other places. Recognize that the point is to make sure you outline
the approach in general, and give a good argument for conducting farming in this way, as well as
giving examples. (between 3 and 4 pages).
Question 2: Writing your own synthesis questions.
Write three questions for an essay test that require the student to both explain knowledge
gained from this class, and integrate different topics that we’ve covered. An ideal question would
require the student to connect together different topics and to put them together in novel or
creative ways. For example, the first question (above) forces the student to think about both
agrarian practices and some of the principles of habitat and/or species protection that we’ve
discussed (which doesn’t rule out you using them again in this question).
An ideal set of three questions would make the student think about much or most of what
we’ve discussed thus far.
