Studio, Graphic Design, Teacher Preparation

Art students at Emory & Henry College experience the best of two worlds. First and foremost is a unique liberal arts education that broadly prepares students for a lifetime of change. Second, art students receive excellent instruction to prepare for a dynamic contemporary art world. Students may choose one of three tracks lleading to the bachelor of arts degree: studio, graphic design, and teacher preparation.

Students in the art program at Emory & Henry College create in an environment that combines an enduring liberal arts education with rigorous studio art practice. With opportunities in the fine arts, graphic design, and teaching, art graduates from Emory & Henry College thrive in a variety of careers. Individual student/faculty interaction, ultimately leading towards a mentor relationship, is the unique feature that makes the Emory & Henry Art Program a success. At every point, faculty members emphasize serious critical thinking concerning visual arts problem-solving.

The highly qualified art faculty offers a wide variety of courses in studio art and art history. Upper level students frequently elect independent studies and internships. Art students at Emory & Henry College conclude their senior year with a required one-person exhibition. Areas of study include painting, drawing, printmaking, crafts, photography, digital art, art history, ceramics, sculpture, and two- and three-dimensional design.

A strong fundamentals approach to design, drawing, and art appreciation is helpful prior to enrollment at Emory & Henry. The department welcomes students with Advanced Placement Studio Art, Advanced Placement Art History, and International Baccalaureate Program credits.

A degree program typically takes four years to complete. A number of students choose double majors and use the combination of art with another program to enrich other career interests. Minors which work well with an arts degree program include biology (medical illustration), English (publishing), mass communications (television production and graphic art), and psychology (art therapy).

The department offers independent studies in art history, computer illustration, graphic art, and special studies in photography.
